EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO CRACOW FOR VOLUNTEERS OF THE AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU MUSEUM
On December 3rd, students who are volunteers of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum participated in an educational trip to Krakow. The trip was organized by the Memorial Volunteer Office. Their first destination was the Plaszow Concentration Camp (KL Plaszow) Museum – Memorial. This was the site of a German Nazi labor and concentration camp that operated from 1942 to 1945. It was primarily intended for the Jewish population from the Krakow Ghetto, which was liquidated in March 1943. The Nazis also located an educational labor camp for Poles there. KL Plaszow was also the site of executions of prisoners from the Krakow prison on Montelupich Street. This site was deoicted in Spielberg’s film “Schindler’s List.” It was from among the prisoners of KL Plaszow that Oskar Schindler ransomed Jews capable of working in the enamelware factory. The next stop of our trip was the exhibition ” Krakowians and the Terror 1939-1945-1956″ at the Pomorska Street branch of the Krakow Historical Museum. The exhibition tells the story of the victims and perpetrators of two totalitarian regimes: Nazi and communist. The most impressive were the inscriptions left by prisoners, preserved to this day on the cell walls. We extend special thanks to Katarzyna Marcak and Kinga Szafrańska.
